Digital Monster X (V-Pet X) Review

AFTER 10 YEARS!

Bandai had decided to produce another line of Digital Monster, or Digimon toys, probably after the success of the release of Digital Monster 20th Anniversary And Digimon Pendulum 201th Anniversary.

Though it id identify as the continuation of the Digimon Virtual Pet line, this product was released under the 'Premium Bandai' line, which makes the toy slightly expensive. The pre-order price was 3780 Yen (around USD$36).

Rear view of the packaging.

From what we can see here, the packaging is as similar as the original V-Pet and V-Pet 20th. The design is so much more better with the silhoutte of Wargreymon X at the back. And at the rear, we can see the exclusive Digimon included in this version (there's a white + blue color version of this), Minervamon X. And there are also simple guide for it's gameplay.

Here is the detail shot of the V-Pet X.

There's a short comic included with the V-Pet X, it tells the backstory of the incident of the Project Ark.

As seen here, the screen, contrast is quite bad, I'm having a hard time to see these and had to see from a high angle to the screen. At the moment, I have breed up to 3 generation, and I currently have a SkullBaluchimon.

As for the gameplay, basically, this is like a V-Pet style raising style with maps similar to Digimon Accel (although this is more seen as successor to Pendulum X, I'd say the map is more similar to Accel).

You raise the Digimon based on the certain requirement, to your liking, and navigate through the map by clearing one area after another.

Just as it's counterpart the Pendulum X, V-Pet X has an XAI system but it plays a more important role other than deciding your attack strength for battling. To explain it simply, XAI system here is a 'dice roll' that decide things for you. The higher the count, the better your situation is. XAI for V-Pet X decides things such as your your attack bar's arrow movement speed (for battle and EXCITE training), the enemy's difficulty in the map and (not conformed) increases your chance for random encounter/gacha.

As for the further explanation of the gameplay, I suggest that you visit these website to learn more about it:

Here is an example for battling another device. I am battling against a same level of Digimon (both Ultimate) from Digimon Pendulum 20th Anniversary.

SkullBaluchimon and Okuwamon

Both got the same number of effort

Full hunger level..

Full strength..

And turns out SkullBaluchimon won the fight!

It's pretty on-par with Pendulum 20th Anniv. so I think it might be a same tier competitor for original Pendulum and other compatible Digivice.

Oh and mind that the battle is using the V-Pet style so the connection compatibility is the same as V-Pet 20th Anniversary.

Verdict:

For a new generation Digimon V-Pet toys, the design is both amazing and disappointing at the same time. Bandai should've come up with a new design for a new device but as we know from how Bandai is lately, they're being a cheapskate on this product;s design too and had recolor and reuse the old design.

The amazing side is that the color and the X logo fit nicely and looks amazing, I wonder what color will be for the next batch (yes I said it, I believe there will be a next batch with other special Digimon included, as they've done with V-Pet 20th and Pendulum 20th)

This is actually a fun device compare to the older V-Pet 20th Anniversary and it's counterpart, Pendulum X. It has no DP so you can battle all-day to clear the map. And it seems on-par with other 20th device too so it may have a potential for an Open 2 category in a Digimon tournament.

Foot note: I might post more Digimon-related stuff here as well as a personal archive, I hope it will be useful in the future :)
